Welcome to my world of Small Ideas!

I have always been a crafty person and have pretty much had a go at everything. I always had a love for Dolls Houses and their small world.
With two grown daughter's and no longer working, I now have the time to commit to my favourite past-time - making and creating Dolls Houses and Room Boxes.
I get totally absorbed in my small world creating tiny objects for the rooms. I am often told I am not on this planet when I am thinking of creating something new! I hope you enjoy my Blog as much as I will enjoy sharing my Small Ideas with you...

Monday Mini Link Party #59

Hello! I hope this finds you all well and had a wonderful weekend. I did some dog training on Sunday with my little Chester boy - we both had a lot of fun!

Mini Jazzi has arrived at Molly Cromwell's home in Virginia and is getting ready to go on a trip to Africa! How exciting for both of them. I will have some more news on Wednesday for you to read.

Doggone It! Part 2

Includes How-to's:

Mission accomplished!

Short Back and Tails Dog Grooming

I haven't got the photo's inside of the actual van, but the layout I installed is a replica. The bath is made from a pill container cut up. I made the grooming bench from some cardboard and covered it with blue non-slip matting (also used on the van wall as a backsplash). On the wall behind the table is a basket containing a comb, hairdryer (made from mobile phone ear plugs) and another bottle.  On the table next to the pipe cleaner dog I fashioned is a pair of scissors and clippers.
You can't really see inside, but I have added some leashes on the grill gate behind the drivers seats and a basket of shampoo bottles etc.
I glued everything to a cardboard base cut to shape to fit the wheel arches inside the van. Another piece of non-slip matting is glued onto the floor. I slid the whole lot inside and this allows all the doors to still open
PP's brother is a digital printer so he kindly did the signwriting on the van. We got the original artwork from the owner and modified to fit the small van.

Hamish MacHairy's Dog Grooming
Using a clear plastic juice bottle was the final solution, cut to the best shape possible with a couple of darts (sewing term) cut into the front and glued together.
A local signwriter kindly let me sift through their stash of vinyl off-cuts and let me have the exact colour of the dog trailer.
I cut the vinyl to size 3 pieces - 2 side and back door pieces and the front. I laid them flat and sketched out the windows and doors, then cut the openings with a knife. I then outlined the window and door frames with a black permanent marker. With a lot of patience and my tongue held to the side of my mouth, I carefully peeled the backing off and wrapped the vinyl around the trailer. Phew - first step done! Now for that tricky shaped front bit. This took two attempts and a lot of um naughty words used. That damn curved front was determined to outwit me again - but patience prevailed - although not entirely happy with how I couldn't smooth the vinyl enough to prevent creases - grrr!

I glued the trailer body to the now modified base with one wheel axle and then using electrician's tape (in black) I edged the top and bottom to match the window and door frames.
The wheel arches are made from plastic containers from "Dippit Biscuits" from Aldi. These twin pack little biscuits not only taste great, but the the 2 tubs inside them are perfect for hand basins and shower bases.
I wrapped the wheel arches in the vinyl and glued them to the sides of the trailer after gluing the wheels to the base.
The trailer tow bar is from the original horse trailer. I added the "jockey wheel" made from a black jewelry plastic tube, a piece of wire slipped through and another black jewelry piece for the wheel. I bent the top piece of wire into a handle shape and glued another small black bead to this.

Inside the trailer, I made the grooming table from cardboard covered it in white vinyl wrap, topped with black non-slip matting, It also has a dog made from a pipe cleaner, a pair of scissors, dog clippers and a dog grooming book I made. I bought the shampoo bottles online that are sitting on the bath and table.
I made the stool from a plastic bottle, glued to a plastic wall plug then onto a plastic washer (found in PP's shed).

The laundry bin is from the top off a gas canister and 2 jump-rings glued to the side, with a dirty towel shoved in (real dirt from the garden). I made the wire basket under the table, using a paper clip for the coloured handle. The dog bowl is made from air dry clay, painted pink. I added in the air dry clay ball and dog bone.
The bath is from another pill box chopped up. The hose is made from a silver chain and silver end piece  inserted into a small drinking straw, secured to the floor with a press stud rivet on the floor.

A very happy Barb with her custom made trailer
Yesterday I delivered the Dog Grooming Trailer and Van. I am done, finished, 90% pleased with the outcomes, but not enough to charge for the orders - no, they will be a gift to the ladies and a lesson to me to never again take on such a challenge!

Doggone it! Part 1

Includes How-to's:
I am feeling somewhat relieved, elated and even pleased with myself. Late last year, I got 2 custom orders through my daughter the dog groomer, for 2 fellow dog groomer's mobile business vans. This type of business is very popular in Australia and is how my daughter got her business started 3 years ago before setting up a salon.

One of the orders was for a modified Ford Transit Van. I spent hours on the Internet looking for same in miniature, but getting the scale was so hard. I finally got onto a Mercedes Benz model in England, but the postage was going to cost more than the van!
Customer's real van
The other mobile dog grooming trailer was made to specification by some very clever trailer maker's. I emailed the client asking her if the trailer had to be curved at the front like the real thing - and she said yes please! (Oh groan, I could have re-worded that question better!)

Customer's real trailer
As my children are grown up, it is years since I was inside a toy shop and was delighted to find 2 big name stores in the same shopping strip. With eyes "miniature ready" I went in search of possible vans or trailers I could bash.
I couldn't believe my luck when I found the same Mercedes Benz vans as online for only $20. And they had one in white - first purchase successful! (In 1:32 scale but close enough!).

Toy Van

After 3 laps of the store looking at Barbie size stuff, (too expensive and big), Fisher Price Loving Family series (also too expensive to wreck) I finally found a horse trailer with a 4 wheel drive vehicle for $14.95 - whoot! I'll take that thanks! (Did I take photo's? oh no that would be silly now wouldn't it?) - here is one similar:
Toy SUV and Horse Trailer

So what took me so long to make these orders you might be wondering? Well, the one order really - the custom designed trailer and typical Jazzi procrastination along with perfection - grrr!

Here is the procrastination list:
  • The horse trailer is too small;
  • It has twin axles - the real trailer has one;
  • Totally wrong shape - why did I buy it?
Making my own custom designed trailer vs perfection:
  • How many plastic milk, cordial, vinegar bottles can I cut up and imagine they are the right shape?
  • Mmm those ice cream containers look almost right - nope too big!
  • Paint just won't take to these plastic surfaces and looks like crap!
  • Make the sides shaped from mdf - that was easy - why does the paint still look awful?
  • Back to the horse trailer - it is now in pieces and the only thing I have ended up with is the trailer base!
Nine months later, along comes daughter for a visit and insists we make something out of all my attempts. (She is tired of her doggie friends asking about their orders).With a quick lesson on how to use my scroll saw and that handy little tool "The Renovator" she carves up the original horse trailer base and attempts to mold acetate into the shape of the real trailer with a heat gun. 3 hours later with a putrid smell happening and melted plastic everywhere - she conceded and said lets just make the stuff to go inside. Oh great, that can be done in no time considering I have been collecting all the bits and bobs that would make perfect dog grooming tools! (see my Dog Clipper tutorial here http://jazziminis.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/new-tutorial.html )

Last week I gave myself a "good talking to" and decided this trailer had to be finished and the answer was in my head somewhere! Here was the conclusion and shopping list:
  1. Find a clear cordial or juice bottle with a "close enough" shape;
  2. Go to a sign making shop and beg to have some vinyl wrap samples in the right colour that I can just wrap around said clear bottle;
  3. Get back in the craft room and make it!
